Candace McKee Ashmun has been a leader on environmental issues on local, county, and state level since 1947. She is the founding Director of ANJEC and has been a member of the state Pinelands Commission since its founding in 1979, its last original commissioner still serving. Ms. Ashmun, a Trustee of the Raritan Headwaters Association, has also served as Trustee of the New Jersey Highlands Coalition and the Whitesbog Preservation Trust. She served as Chair of the Great Swamp Advisory Committee and was on the Board of the Sierra Club/NJ Chapter. She was appointed by Governor Kean and Governor Florio and served six years on the New Jersey State Planning Commission. She has received numerous awards for formulating environmental policy on land use, groundwater, and surface water protection, in identifying environmental problems, building coalitions to solve those problems, and measuring the effectiveness of protective strategies. The 4,000 acre Candace McKee Ashmun Preserve, managed by the New Jersey Conservation Foundation was dedicated in 2010 for her tireless efforts over more than six decades to help New Jersey’s environment. Born in San Francisco and raised in Brazil and Portland Oregon, she is a graduate of Smith College. Ms. Ashmun has been a member of the Board of The Fund for New Jersey since 1990.
